Learn to read with the Google app
Read Along is a free reading app for Android that helps kids have fun while learning to read.
Read Along has an in-app reading buddy that listens to your little one read aloud, offers help when they struggle, and rewards them with stars when they do well – guiding them as they progress. It works best with children who already have some basic knowledge of the alphabet.
After first download, the app works offline
With many students currently at home due to school closures, families around the world are looking for ways to help children develop their reading skills. To support families, we're sharing early access to Read Along by Google today. It's an Android app for kids ages 5 and up that helps them learn to read by giving them verbal and visual feedback as they read stories aloud.
Read Along uses Google's speech recognition technology to support literacy and was first launched in India (where it is available as "Bolo"). After receiving encouraging feedback from parents, we are excited to share this app with other young learners around the world.
Read Along is now available in over 180 countries and in nine languages including English, Spanish, Portuguese and Hindi. Read Along will continue to improve as we receive feedback from families, expand our selection of books, and add more features.
How Read Along works :
Read Along helps children learn independently and build their reading skills with the help of an in-app reading buddy named Diya. As children read aloud, Diya uses Google's text-to-speech and speech recognition technology to determine whether a student is struggling to read a passage or is reading it successfully. It gives them positive and reinforcing feedback, just like parents or teachers. Kids can also tap Diya anytime to help them say a word or sentence.
Read Along keeps young minds engaged with a collection of diverse and interesting stories from around the world and the games that are incorporated into those stories.
Parents can create profiles for multiple readers who tap their photo to learn at their own pace and track their individual progress. Read Along customizes the experience by recommending the right difficulty level of stories and games based on their reading level.
Security and connectivity
Read Along was created with children's safety and privacy in mind and contains no ads or in-app purchases. And after the initial download of the app and the Read Along stories, it works offline without Wi-Fi or data – helping you with your concerns about uncontrolled internet access. Parents can simply connect to Wi-Fi regularly to download more stories.
Read Along is also easy to start and does not require a login. Even the voice data is analyzed in real time on the device – so it works offline – and is not sent to any Google servers.
